Foundry@NCSU

Goals

To develop semiconductor devices for electronic, optoelectronic and sensing applications. Members will gain experience with the entire development cycle, including design, modeling, fabrication and characterization.

Issues Involved or Addressed

NC State is a world leader in wide bandgap semiconductors for electronics and optoelectronics. These materials represent the next frontier after silicon technology, offering the opportunity to improve power and telecommunications systems, among others. Early efforts will be devoted to the development of gallium nitride (GaN) technology. The team will optimize a process for GaN transistors, which will initially be used for teaching purposes on campus. This will involve understanding the impact of individual processing steps by tying design and fabrication choices to device performance. Members will gain valuable and tangible skills that will prepare them to join the workforce or pursue advanced degrees in the general areas of semiconductors and electronics. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds, and strongly encourage peer-to-peer instruction and interaction.

Methods and Technologies

Device modeling • Electrical characterization • Materials characterization • Microscopy • Thin film deposition

Academic Majors of Interest

Chemical Engineering • Computer Engineering • Electrical Engineering • Material Science Engineering • Mechanical Engineering • Physics

Preferred Interests

Semiconductor materials and device design, fabrication/manufacturing and characterization. Laboratory and/or cleanroom experience are helpful but not required. Students will be expected to participate on this VIP team over several semesters, so they will have time to gain knowledge as they go. Motivation and interest are most important.
